Linebacker, Lineman Visit Green Bay

2003-03-21

The Packers and free agent linebacker Dwayne Rudd are expected to meet today in Green Bay. The Packers also had offensive lineman Grey Ruegamer in for a visit earlier in the week, according to reports.

Rudd was released by the Cleveland Browns on Feb. 26. He played for the Minnesota Vikings from 1997-2000.
The Packers are in need of a weakside linebacker, which is where Rudd started for the Browns. But he also has played strongside linebacker.

Green Bay is seeking a replacement for Nate Wayne, who signed with the Philadelphia Eagles last week. The Packers signed free agent Hannibal Navies earlier this week to play middle linebacker for Hardy Nickerson, who is expected to retire.

The Packers also are facing the possibility of losing Na`il Diggs, a restricted free agent. The Detroit Lions had Diggs in for a visit on Tuesday and reportedly are prepared to make him an offer that includes a bonus of around $5 million.

Ruegamer is an unrestricted free agent who played for the New England Patriots last year. Drafted in 1999 by the Miami Dolphins, he also spent time with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
