Roster Move: Packers Re-sign Defensive Tackle

2003-10-10

Because of injuries to other defensive linemen, the Packers signed veteran defensive tackle Larry Smith, who was with the team late in the preseason.

A fifth year pro, Smith played in Green Bay?s final two preseason games before getting released in the final roster cutdown on Sept. 1. He originally wa s a second-round draft choice of Jacksonville in 1999. He played in 51 games for the Jaguars over four seasons, with seven starts, before being placed on waivers Aug. 13.

To make room for Smith, the Packers released wide receiver/return specialist Reggie Swinton, whom the Packers acquired in a trade with Dallas on Sept. 30.

Joe Johnson (triceps), Gilbert Brown (knee), Aaron Kampman (ankle) and Chukie Nwokorie (shoulder) have been limited in practices and games, forcing the Packers to re-sign Smith.
